Earache is a common problem faced mostly by children but is not exclusive to them. When the Eustachian tubes, which connect the inner ear with the nasal cavity, get swollen and clogged, the pressure on the ear cavity increases, and this causes earache. This pressure may happen due to common cold, accumulation of ear wax in the ear, bacterial or sinus infections. Sometimes sudden changes in the atmospheric pressure caused by mountaineering or air travel may also cause an earache. In some cases, earache may also be accompanied by difficulty in hearing and occasional discharge of fluid from the ear. The intensity of the pain often increases during the night, as it is usually at this time that the muscles of the mouth, throat and nose are in a position of rest, and there is no local movement to distribute the excess pressure away from the ear canal.

There are several easy ways of preventing and treating earache. It is recommended that you keep your ears clean always. Regular use of ear cleaning buds and cleansing drops prevents the accumulation of wax inside the ears and reduces the chances of earache. Consuming natural sources of vitamin C such as citrus fruits is useful in increasing the immunity of your system and preventing earache. You should avoid dairy products and frozen or chilled foods and drinks, as these tend to aggravate earache. Drinking hot fluids is known to be of great help in relieving earache. Another popular way of easing the pressure inside the ear canal is to chew gum or to simply yawn several times, as these involve vigorous movement of the jaw. If the earache has been caused by bacterial growth, putting a few drops of ginger juice inside the affected ear helps destroy the germs and relieves pain. A few drops of basil juice or hydrogen peroxide solution also have similar effects. Alternatively, you may also extract the juice of an onion and pour a few drops of it into the ear thrice every day. The strong chemicals in onion have natural anti-bacterial and fungal properties which reduce pain and internal swelling. For another remedy, crush a few fresh mango leaves and extract the juice from them; then warm the juice a little and pour a few drops into the ear. In addition, warm a clove of garlic in a spoonful of sesame oil over a low flame; then pour this into both ears alternately, at an interval of 15 minutes. Following this procedure daily should help relieve earache symptoms.
